Trail running in Salzburg for mountain pros
Trails in the Mozart city
There are actually an impressive twelve trails throughout the extended municipal area awaiting enthusiastic runners, with new variations currently in the planning stage. The City Mountains, located mostly on the outskirts, serve as the main destinations. Run up to dizzying heights from Glasenbach and Gnigl or explore the depths of the province of Salzburg as far as Ebenau and Hof on the marathon distances.
The Gaisberg Trail plays a special role among the rich range of trails. It can be tackled from both sides of Salzburg’s historic city centre and leads directly onto the Kapuzinerberg. The Basteiweg along the city wall is a particularly tough route with its 1,718 steps. Continuing onward, the route leads onto the Gaisberg peak opening up to astonishing views. As stunning as the Gaisberg Trail is, the half marathon is only for genuine running pros.
Top-notch evens for trail runners
It’s not just the number of routes that’s constantly increasing, there are also more and more events in Salzburg dedicated to all aspects of trail running. The Mozart 100 took place only a few weeks ago, raising hope for another event in the coming years. If you don’t want to wait that long, the Salzburg Trailrunning Festival is on from 25 to 27 October 2019. Easy-going beginners’ events inspire newcomers and kids. The Panorama and Fortress Trail is a bit more challenging, but it is the aforementioned Gaisberg Trail on the final day of the event that will be a toughest cookie to crack.
