Sledging in Salzburg and its surroundings

On a wooden sledge through the province of Salzburg

Our parents and grandparents, even our great-grandparents used to race down every small, snow-covered hill in winter on a wooden sledge. Climbing up, racing down, knocking the snow off the clothes and going again – a tradition that remains to this very day. But sledging in Salzburg is much more than that. There are now countless runs throughout the province that aren’t just for tobogganers, but also for sledgers. There’s nothing more fun for us at Romantik Hotel GMACHL, which is why it gives us great joy to introduce you to our favourite runs, slopes and hills throughout the province of Salzburg. By the way, you’ll find the right sledges directly at most runs or in local sport stores.

The city mountains and hills

Almost every hill in the city and the countryside attracts sledging enthusiasts. Children in particular love racing down the small city mountains and hills in the surroundings. Don’t miss out on the following runs when sledging in Salzburg:

  • “Schli” in Morzg:
The name gives it away: “Schli” is the popular abbreviation for the Schlittenhügel (sledging hill) in Morzg. As soon as there’s enough snow it attracts residents from all the neighbouring districts.
  • Mönchsberg:
The city mountain is among the most glorious recreational areas in the region. Several small hills at Gasthaus Stadtalm await you for fun downhill runs.
  • Leopoldskron Moos:
The Leopoldskron Kindergarten Moos is widely known for its rolling, grassy roof. As soon as it has turned white, brave kids are lining up with their daring sledges.
  • Nonntal Krauthügel:
It’s not just tobogganers who love what is likely Salzburg’s most famous hill. The quaint Krauthügel is situated at the foot of Hohensalzburg Fortress – short, steep and just tons of fun!
  • Gaisberg:
Sledging turns into pure entertainment right outside Salzburg. Several small hills and elevations turn the entire mountain into one massive downhill run with short plateaus for breathers. The walk uphill can be quite taxing!

Sledging in the mountains

Those who want to go up higher can race down one of the many toboggan runs in the mountains on a sledge. Here are some of our favourites for sledging around Salzburg:

  • Winklalm Flachau:
This 2.5-km-long run awaits enthusiastic downhillers near the slopes where alpine skiing legend Hermann Maier once started out. Illuminated in the evening, the run on the Winklalm is especially fun on a sledge.
  • Winterbauer in Altenmarkt:
The 2.2-km-long run is one of the biggest challenges in the entire province of Salzburg. Narrow turns and the steep slope make sledging in Salzburg a real experience. Alternatively, you can race down this great run with the Zipfelbob bobsled.
  • Hahnbaumalm St. Johann:
There are many sledging hills, but only a few have such an astonishing view as the run at the Hahnbaumlift high above St. Johann im Pongau. Just rent something to ride on in one of the many sport stores and race down into the valley!
  • Leo’s Kufengaudi:
The name says it all: Race down approx. 460 altitude metres between the intermediate station and valley station of the Asitzbahn in no time on the sledge and toboggan run on the Asitz in Leogang. Look forward to sledging fun until after dark every Tuesday and Friday.
  • Karkogel in Abtenau:
Take the Karkogelbahn up to the start of what is likely the biggest sledging insider’s tip of the region! The illuminated natural run on the Karkogel in Abtenau leads across three amazingly primed, family-friendly kilometres. And once you’ve arrived down in the valley? Well, time to go back up the mountain!

Sledging in Salzburg – fun for all ages during your GMACHL holiday. We will gladly prepare a GMACHL snack bag with drink, apple and muesli bar for your tobogganing adventure – just order and pick up at reception! Arriving back at the hotel, a delicious Fondue Chinoise awaits you in the GMACHL restaurant – every Saturday, Sunday and Monday on advance booking.
