Delightfully enjoyable hiking near Salzburg
The best hiking trails around the city
Being a GMACHL guests allows you to fully experience the entire exciting variety of the province of Salzburg. Amazing walks and hikes lead you to the city of Mozart and its very multifaceted surroundings. Hiking near Salzburg is connected with active variety and a particular plus of buzz. Which one of the many paths are you gunning for today? We’ll gladly share with you where hiking around Salzburg is especially beautiful.
Bergheim is right outside the city of Mozart. Our first hike starts on the small rise of the local church in the centre. Looking to the east you can already see the basilica of Maria Plain and its high-rising church tower. The Hofstättenweg path leads across hilly terrain to the inn “Zur Plainlinde”. Continue your hike eastward on the summit of Kalvarienberg. The route to the peak either leads across the tarmac paved road or the stairs up to Kreuzberg. Hike back on the same path – an approx. 1.5-hour-long round hike that feels even more magical in deeply snow-covered winter.
You’re probably familiar with parts of this hike from our blog. This path starts directly in front of our Romantik Hotel GMACHL leading through Elixhausen to the lakes Ragginger See and Luginger See. Follow the tarmac paved road at the intersection to the Windiggut. There’s a small wooden hut near the inn. It is home to a little observatory that opens the view of the stars several nights a week. During this hike you get to enjoy the amazing mountain panorama with Gaisberg, Untersberg and Schafberg before your eyes.
Glasenbachklamm – Erentrudisalm
The small municipality Elsbethen is located south of the city of Salzburg. It invites you to several delightful hiking paths in fair weather. You should have at least three hours (without breaks) at hand for the following round tour of 11.5 km. You start at the entrance to the Glasenbachklamm gorge with several parking options. A mere five-minute walk takes you to the first information board of the geologically inclined Geo Schauweg. Here you learn interesting facts about the gorge and the waterfall. Having crossed the gorge, you pass a forest to reach wide meadows. Follow the markings to Fageralm and Erentrudisalm. A few steeper stages and even a short, slightly slippery rock part need to be conquered, but the view alone is worth it all. Once on top, you absolutely have to make a savoury culinary rest stop.
Hiking near Salzburg wouldn’t be the same without this glorious nature path: Anthering is only a few kilometres from Elixhausen, halfway between Salzburg and Oberndorf. The Au nature sanctuary remained close to nature, making lovely experiences palpable. Lush, diverse vegetation aside, you might get to see rare birds, fallow deer, beavers and even boars depending on time of day and weather! Leaving the Au, you find a footpath alongside the Salzach river that either takes you to Oberndorf (including Nussdorfer Au) or Bergheim.
And then there’s this amazing trip to the Salzkammergut that’s an integral part of hiking near Salzburg. Situated on the border of Upper Austria and Salzburg, it’s only a 45-minute drive to Schafberg with several hiking trails to the top, each taking around three to four hours. You might need some stamina, even though beginners can ease part of the journey by taking the cog railway. Having arrived on top, the view of the lakes Wolfgangsee, Mondsee, Traunsee and Irrsee is truly enchanting. Why not combine your hike with a day trip – stunning St. Wolfgang with a cooling dip into the lake is always worth your while.
