cIRCULAR sALZBURG HIKING TOURS THROUGHOUT THE REGION
Round tours and themed hikes near the GMACHL
Many hiking trails in Salzburg strictly run from A to B. Both the way there and back are the same – sure, it can be nice, but it offers little new experiences. Thankfully, there are numerous circular Salzburg hiking loops waiting to be discovered by you! Whether in direct GMACHL proximity, around the city of Salzburg or throughout the extended holiday region from the Salzkammergut to the Alpine foreland: These tours make hikers’ hearts skip a beat!
Ice age round tour in Henndorf
A brief drive to Henndorf am Wallersee (no more than a 20-minute drive depending on traffic) opens up frosty prehistoric world. The Alpine foreland was covered by massive glaciers until 20,000 years ago. The scenery around Henndorf was shaped by the Wallersee branch glacier that left behind the eponymous lake at the end of the ice age. One of the scenically most beautiful circular Salzburg hiking tours runs from Henndorf onto Steinwaindl, Grosse Plaike and Heimkehrerkreuz and back. 22 information boards with fascinating facts about the ice-age region accompany your trip.
Grabensee round tour
Almost divine peace and relaxation await you on nine jovial kilometres in Perwang on the border between the provinces Salzburg and Upper Austria. Start at the local church and follow the path P3 to Rödhausen, where the lake loop tour P4 begins. Reaching the shore of Grabensee lake, you hike through the nature reserve to Zellhof and further to Fraham. Continue to the north via Gransdorf and back to Perwang in about 2.5 hours.
Oberndorf & Laufen
One of our favourite hiking trails connects Salzburg with Bavaria. Oberndorf on Austrian and Laufen on German side can look back to several centuries of shared history. The two-town round tour provides deeper insights on 18 informative, illustrated stations. Starting at Silent Night Chapel, where the world-famous Christmas carol was first performed in 1818, you walk along the Salzach river loop to the Nepomuk monument, then cross over the Europasteg bridge to the German side. After a short tour through Laufen, you return to Oberndorf across the renovated border bridge with stations in the town park, at the town church and the Schiffer monument before returning to the chapel. If you have a bit more time at hand and endurance, you can extend this circular hiking trail in Salzburg to Maria Bühel (scaling the 139 steps onto Kalvarienberg) with a loop via the Schopperstadl back to the Europasteg.
Millennium path Mattsee
No, this circular Salzburg hiking tour has nothing to do with the Robbie Williams song. It’s rather a combination of two themed paths summarising the millennia-old history of Mattsee. A whopping 38 information boards lead you across the Schlossberg round path and the Wartstein round path with the local market square as the starting point. Short and sweet with only 1.54 km, this tour is pleasantly pram-friendly.
Tannberg round tour
Our last of the circular Salzburg hiking tours again leads to the Upper Austrian border. This half-day hike around Tannberg starts at the information board in central Lochen leading across around 13 km on an altitude of 786 m – manageable but still high enough to enjoy the view of the surrounding lakes. Calling all bikers: An approx. 30-km-long loop for cyclists accompanies the Tannberg trail. You can start this fine tour in Lochen, Strasswalchen, Neumarkt, Schleedorf, Lengau, Mattsee or Köstendorf.
These and other hiking loops will enrich your GMACHL holiday immensely. Did we whet your appetite for adventure? We’ll gladly accept your non-binding enquiry and are looking forward to indulging you all around your trips! Are you already familiar with our autumnal hiking highlight, a “fondue chinoise”?
