The most beautiful museums in Salzburg

Something for art and culture enthusiasts!

In addition to glorious baroque architecture and the many sights that can be admired everywhere in the historic old town, numerous Salzburg museums cover a wide selection of different topics. Let us introduce you to our personal highlights.

Mozart’s Birthplace and Mozart’s Residence

The history of the Mozart family is closely connected with Salzburg. Wolfgang Amadeus was born in 1756 in Getreidegasse 9 in the historic city centre. His family lived here for 26 years. Both Mozart’s Birthplace and Mozart’s Residence at Makartplatz now serve as museums. Visit to find out more about these Salzburg museums.

Salzburg Museum

Salzburg’s largest city museum in the Neue Residenz presents the art history of city and country. The museum has received the European Museum of the Year Award in 2009. Walk from the Residenz directly to the Panorama Museum, one of several exhibition sites. Find more information at

Salzburg Baroque Museum

The main site of the international baroque research is in the Mirabellgarten. The Salzburg Baroque Museum focuses on baroque painting culture with depictions from the 17th and 18th century. Learn more about this Salzburg museum at (German only).

Take a tour of one of the most beautiful museums in Salzburg. The corridor of the DomQuartier was closed for 200 years. Now it connects the Residenz Palace and its staterooms to the Residenzgalerie, the Cathedral Museum and the Museum St Peter. The baroque collection Rossacher in the northern oratories is also part of the DomQuartier with its 2,000 exhibits on over 15,000 m². Learn more about the DomQuartier museums in Salzburg at

Haus der Natur

Families with children value the Haus der Natur for its variety. 80 presentation rooms spread across several floors grant deep insights into various natural habitats. Among the highlights are the massive aquarium and the space area. Find more information about this Salzburg museum at

Museum der Moderne

Two buildings at two different locations promise spectacular insights into modern art. The MdM Rupertinum, opposite the Festspielhaus, sees itself as a collection of highly different artistic concepts. Located high above the city of Salzburg, the MdM Mönchsberg grants fascinating insights into modern art in its respective contemporary context. Find more information at

Fortress Museum

What was life like on a medieval fortress? Hohensalzburg Fortress is among the best-maintained fortifications in Europe. A variety of exhibits tell the illustrious castle history and, among other things, how a fortress became a place to live. Find more information on the medieval Salzburg museum at (in German).

Cathedral Excavations Museum

Among the many historical museums in Salzburg, the Cathedral Excavations Museum tends to get lost in the shuffle. Hidden rather inconspicuously beneath Residenzplatz and Domplatz, it unites art treasures that have been excavated on city grounds since Roman times. Learn more about this amazing site at

Museum Residenzgalerie

Salzburg’s Residenz Palace originally served as a prestigious building for the archbishops. Nowadays, the Residenzgalerie resurrects this chapter of the city’s history. Marvel at two centuries of history of style accompanied by alternating themed exhibitions. Find more information on the Residenz museum in Salzburg at

Michael Haydn Museum

This small museum in the court of the archabbey St Peter is dedicated to Michael Haydn, master of church music. Enjoy exciting insights into the life and work of this musical genius. Find additional information at

Trachtenmuseum Salzburg

This museum in Salzburg is dedicated entirely to the long history of traditional costumes. Situated in the Griesgasse, this museum shows how these costumes evolved and what still makes them modern today. National costumes can also be bough. If you’d like to learn more about these traditional costumes, we recommend a trip to Anif near Salzburg with its characteristic Dirndl dress costumes from the past decades and centuries.

Toy Museum

The toy collection of the Carolino Augusteum inside the historic Bürgerspital has a special role among the popular museums in Salzburg for children. Teddies and dolls, wooden toys, train sets and tin figures have been making children’s eyes glisten since 1978. Find more information at
