The Romantic Hotel GMACHL celebrated its 675th anniversary in 2009. The estate to the north-east of Salzburg that houses the four-star-superior hotel has been in family hands since 1334.
This means hotel history has been made in Elixhausen for nearly 700 years. Today the Romantic Hotel GMACHL is run by the 23rd generation, namely the Hirnböck-Gmachl family. Every generation implemented innovations and contributed to the success of the hotel, thereby ensuring that you can now experience a family run business of the highest order in Elixhausen.
The estate on which the Romantic Hotel GMACHL was built was first documented in 1334. The first owner was a man named Georg – the family name is not known. It took until 1470 for a surname to surface: Elixhauser. Until 1740 this name stood for lively trading activities and the opening of the tavern that is the basis for the development of the hotel as we know it today. In the process Thersia Elixhauser married restaurateur named Johann Georg Gmachl – thus the foundations for the Romantic Hotal GMACHL of today were laid.
Back in 2009 the hotel experienced its most significant change under the custodianship of the Hirnböck-Gmachl family. The four-star-superior house was expanded by a new hotel building just in time for the “675 Years GMACHL Elixhausen” festivities. It now offers its guests 73 modern and traditional rooms. At the same time the family developed the GMACHL Spa “Horizont”, which spreads out over roughly 1,500 square metres over two floors of the new building. The spa offers truly breathtaking views of the Salzburg Fortress (“Festung Hohensalzburg”) and the surrounding mountain ranges. Despite its size the Romantic Hotel GMACHL has managed to preserve its familiar flair – it successfully combines wellness and comfort with a typical down-to-earth Austrian mentality.
