The Salzburg Christmas Market first appeared in the 17th century and was known as the “Nikolai Market” in those days. For the four weeks in advent travelling salesmen offered dolls, sweet treats and second-hand goods on the square in front of the cathedral (“Domplatz”). The Christmas Market of today first appeared in 1972.
Countless tourists are drawn to the market around Christmas every year, mainly because of its unique winter flair and its traditional sale huts. By the way, even the world famous Christmas carol “Silent Night, Holy Night” by Franz Xaver Gruber originated in Salzburg. It was first performed in the “Silent Night Chapel” in Oberndorf near Salzburg.
